 Alexander Kirsanov: Hi, Rick! Thanks for agreeing to answer our questions. Let’s get started!

1. Tell us more about your collaboration with Serafina. How did you meet, and what exactly do you do for her?
 We first met when she was part of a German dance-project "The Admirals" , wo were doing support for sone Scooter-shows in Germany. Since that time we became close Friends and a couple of years ago we started to collab as musical partners.

2. The last Leichtmatrose release came out in 2023. Is anything new planned for 2025?
 As from 2025 I will concentrate on the work with Seraphina Kalze as this became my core project now. So with leichtmatrose nothing new is planned at this time.

3. Are there any projects you’ve been involved in or composed music for that we don’t know about?
 I did the production for a charity project that involved a couple of German independent artists together with one of the best know German singesongwriter since the 70s "Reinhard Mey" that pleads for more peaceful times in the world. You can watch it on Youtube.

4. Would you like to take part in other electronic projects as a producer?
 Well, lately I achieved everything I could ever dream of in the Scooter years, so I stopped focussing on Dance music in general, but you never know what might happen...

5. Are you interested in ambient, drone, or other non-dance electronic music genres? Would you like to try yourself in these styles?
 I like to listen to ambient music to relax, but i don´t feel the need to produce it on my own.

6. Do you currently use analog equipment in music production, or do you work exclusively in DAW?
  Well I used to work with all the analog gear in my 80s and 90s so i know it as well as i know the cons of it - they always break, you won´t find anybody for maintenance and you have to save every patch on on every synth individually - nope, I still do have a couple of rare gems, Devil Fish 303, ESO Wasp, EMS VCS3 to name a few, but as AU synths became so powerful I do not use the vintage gear on a regular base. So yes, i work completely in the box.

7. Do you follow AI developments in music? Do you see a future in it? Do you use AI in production?
 Of course I closely follow the AI development, It can be quite inspiring but i don´t think it will / can replace human creativity in art...

8. What are your daughter Keira’s interests? Can she play any instruments? How does she feel about your current work and your time in Scooter?
 Keira started producing her own music a couple of years ago, she already released her first song "October" under the artist name "Angely" but she´s still mainly working on her High school diploma ;-) Here´s the spotify link. It´s a great experience to see her develop that way.

9. You’ve worked in neoclassical music with Alexander Raytchev. Would you like to do something similar again?
 Making music with Alex was a wonderful experience it extended my musical horizon a lot but lately it was a once in a lifetime experience. It was cool to present the songs live in selected planetariums together with a string quartet and mindblowing 360 degree visuals.

10. What or who has impressed you in the music industry in recent years?
 Lady Gaga. She´s such a versatile musician and often underrated. And of cource M83, especially their albums "Hurry up, we're dreaming" and "Fantasy".

11. Do people still recognize you as a former member of Scooter?
 From time to time, yes. But it became really relaxed...

12. Do you ever get a sudden idea and think it would be perfect for Scooter?
 I think we really tried out each and every Idea HP and me ever had in common in our minds so, no. I´m peacefully done with it.

13. Can you recall a Scooter track that was particularly difficult to produce and why? It doesn’t necessarily have to be a single—maybe something from an album?
 "The Question" - we were really working nearly half a year on realising that jumpstyle arrangement, learning about the claps´ attack, the gate times of the grooving chords in the chorus and so many more important details that finally mate the song pump - it really became frustrating at one point. But short of surrender we tried to add the good old reverse offbeat bass sound from nessaja, weekend and many more productions that we actually didn´t want to use any more and - bam.

14. Which artists would you highlight right now? What music is inspiring you at the moment?
 Nothing in particular, but wait - I happened to come across this wired duo called ‘haute and freddy’, they are totally bonkers. I love that!

15. Scooter now actively uses SongCamp in their music writing process. How do you feel about this? As far as I know, when you were in the band, you tried to generate ideas as a foursome.
 The times they are-a-changing ;-) well, that´s the way things work nowadays. I personally try to limit the count of cowriters to three or four but it always depends...

16. Have you listened to Scooter albums after you left? Can you give your opinion as a sound engineer? Are there any tracks that stand out to you?
 They still sound absolutely professional and up to date, but please understand that i am no so deep inside to point out specific tracks.

17. What do you think about the trend of short tracks on streaming services?
 Frankly, the beginning of Pop Music also had those really short songs often not longer than two minutes or so. And established Artists still release productions longer that 4 minutes, so what´s the deal?

18. I recently revisited the single Shake That and was amazed at how many small details are in the track. It’s a very stylish and well-thought-out production! Do you remember how the production process went?
 Omg, that was decades ago. I just remember that we got the idea for the main theme after a show at the tennis stadium in Dubai. We went to a secret 70's party with all the disco and soul music from that era and had a great time... Shake you booty by 'K.C. and the Sunshine Band' played a central role in one way or another ;-)

19. How did you achieve such a fat and powerful drum sound in Scooter tracks?
 We always cared a lot about the source Samples' sound quality, we had so many sample cd libraries those days so i took the needed time to listen to every single sample to find my personal favourite ones. The rest was mainly eq, saturation and compressor.

20. How difficult was the mixing process in the ‘90s compared to modern digital technologies?
 The main difference was that our main desk, an MCI JC 538 was 100% analog so no "save and recall". and all the effects were outboard gear so you had to finish onr song after another, jumping between two or more productions was simply not possible

21. Which Scooter track do you like the most from a technical standpoint?
 I think Nessaja had a really big sound for it´s time.

22. Can you name your favourite Scooter track from a sound engineer’s perspective? And your least favourite?
 Besides the hits, there are some tracks that still touch me in a certain way, e.g. ‘This is a Monstertune’ from OHH, especially with the driving arpeggiator in the B-part, which comes from a synthesiser called ‘The Raven’ that still reminds me a lot of my early rave days, and the orchestral version of ‘Stripped’ that I made one night alone in our studio... And ‘Posse’, because it's just fun. ‘Where the beats’ (live) still gives me goosebumps.
 I think ‘It's a biz’ is the worst, we were just too stressed and IMO you can still hear that in the music.

23. Final question! In one interview, you mentioned that you were involved in producing Beetle Juice Pres. Rick Maniac & Dr. Loop – Day-O (Banana Boat Song). The B-side Pump It Up was also released on this single. Did you take part in producing that track as well?
 Well that was a production we did for a good friend of us and guess who sang the "Daylight coming..." part :-))) Spoiler: not HP ;-) In addition I can also report that we're still on deep friendly terms and have a drink (or two?) together from time to time.

1. Расскажи подробнее о своём сотрудничестве с Серафиной. Как вы познакомились, и чем именно ты для неё занимаешься?
 Мы впервые встретились, когда она была участницей немецкого танцевального проекта The Admirals, который выступал на разогреве некоторых концертов Scooter в Германии. С тех пор мы стали близкими друзьями, а несколько лет назад начали сотрудничать как музыкальные партнёры.

2. Последний релиз Leichtmatrose вышел в 2023 году. Планируется ли что-то новое в 2025 году?
 С 2025 года я сосредоточусь на работе с Серафиной Кальце, так как это стало моим основным проектом. Поэтому с Leichtmatrose пока ничего нового не планируется.

3. Есть ли проекты, в которых ты участвовал или писал музыку, но о которых мы не знаем?
 Я занимался продюсированием благотворительного проекта, в котором участвовали несколько независимых немецких артистов вместе с одним из самых известных немецких авторов-исполнителей с 70-х годов — Райнхардом Маем. Проект посвящён призыву к миру. Его можно посмотреть на YouTube.

4. Хотел бы ты поработать в других электронных проектах в качестве продюсера?
 Знаешь, за годы работы в Scooter я достиг всего, о чём мог мечтать, поэтому перестал концентрироваться на танцевальной музыке в целом. Но кто знает, что будет дальше...

5. Интересуешься ли ты эмбиентом, дроуном или другими не танцевальными жанрами электронной музыки? Хотел бы попробовать себя в этих стилях?
 Мне нравится слушать эмбиент, чтобы расслабиться, но я не чувствую потребности создавать такую музыку самому.

6. Ты сейчас используешь аналоговое оборудование в продакшене или полностью работаешь в DAW?
 Я работал со всем этим аналоговым оборудованием в 80-х и 90-х, поэтому хорошо знаю и его преимущества, и недостатки — оно постоянно ломается, трудно найти мастера для ремонта, и каждый патч нужно сохранять отдельно для каждого синтезатора. Нет, у меня всё ещё есть несколько редких экземпляров, например, Devil Fish 303, EDP Wasp, EMS VCS3, но так как программные синтезаторы стали очень мощными, я редко использую винтажное оборудование. В основном я работаю полностью в цифровой среде.

7. Следишь ли ты за развитием ИИ в музыке? Видишь ли в этом будущее? Используешь ли ИИ в продакшене?
 Конечно, я внимательно слежу за развитием ИИ. Это может быть вдохновляюще, но я не думаю, что ИИ сможет заменить человеческое творчество в искусстве.

8. Чем интересуется твоя дочь Кейра? Играет ли она на инструментах?
 Кейра несколько лет назад начала создавать свою музыку. Она уже выпустила свою первую песню "October" под псевдонимом Angely, но в основном сейчас сосредоточена на окончании школы. Cсылка на Spotify. Ссылка на Apple Music. Это потрясающий опыт — видеть, как она развивается.

9. Ты работал с Александром Райтчевым над неоклассической музыкой. Хотел бы ты снова сделать что-то подобное?
 Работать с Алексом было замечательно, это значительно расширило мой музыкальный кругозор. Но, честно говоря, это было скорее разовым опытом. Было круто исполнять эти треки в планетариях с квартетом струнных и завораживающими визуализациями на 360 градусов.

10. Что или кто впечатлил тебя в музыкальной индустрии за последние годы?
 Леди Гага. Она невероятно разносторонний музыкант, хотя её часто недооценивают. И, конечно, M83, особенно их альбомы "Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming" и "Fantasy".

11. Тебя до сих пор узнают как бывшего участника Scooter?
 Время от времени, да. Но сейчас это происходит довольно реже.

12. Бывает ли так, что у тебя внезапно возникает идея, которая, как ты думаешь, идеально подошла бы для Scooter?
 Думаю, мы с HP успели воплотить все идеи, которые у нас были, так что нет, я с этим полностью завершил.

13. Какой трек Scooter был самым сложным в продакшене и почему?
 «The Question». Мы работали над ним почти полгода, пытаясь реализовать джампстайл-аранжировку. Мы разбирались с атакой клэпов, гейтами аккордов в припеве и множеством других деталей. В какой-то момент это стало уже просто раздражающим. В итоге мы решили добавить старый добрый реверсный басовый звук из треков Nessaja, Weekend и многих других — и, бац, всё сработало.

14. Какие артисты вдохновляют тебя сейчас?
 Никто конкретно. Хотя недавно наткнулся на странный дуэт Haute and Freddy — они просто безумцы. Мне это понравилось!

15. Сейчас Scooter активно используют Song Camp при создании музыки. Как ты к этому относишься? Насколько я знаю, когда ты был в группе, вы генерировали идеи вчетвером.
 Времена меняются :-) Сейчас так устроена индустрия. Лично я стараюсь ограничивать количество соавторов тремя-четырьмя, но это всегда зависит от ситуации.

16. Слушал ли ты альбомы Scooter после ухода? Какое у тебя мнение как у звукорежиссёра? Есть ли треки, которые тебе особенно запомнились?
 Они по-прежнему звучат профессионально и актуально, но, надеюсь, ты поймёшь, что я уже не углубляюсь, чтобы выделить конкретные треки.

17. Что ты думаешь о тенденции коротких треков на стриминговых сервисах?
 Если честно, в начале поп-музыки тоже было много коротких песен, по две минуты. И до сих пор известные артисты выпускают треки длиннее четырёх минут, так что, по сути, ничего нового.

18. Я недавно переслушал Shake That и был поражён количеством деталей в треке. Это очень стильная и проработанная продакшн-работа. Помнишь, как проходил процесс создания?
 О, Боже, это было так давно. Помню, что идея пришла после концерта на теннисном стадионе в Дубае. Мы попали на секретную вечеринку в стиле 70-х с диско и соулом, и там отлично провели время. Песня Shake Your Booty группы KC & The Sunshine Band сыграла ключевую роль.

19. Как вы добивались такого мощного звучания ударных в треках Scooter?
 Мы всегда уделяли внимание качеству исходных сэмплов. У нас было множество библиотек, и я тратил время, чтобы найти лучшие. Остальное — эквализация, сатурация и компрессия.

20. Насколько сложным был процесс сведения в 90-х по сравнению с современными цифровыми технологиями?
 Главное отличие заключалось в том, что наш пульт MCI JC 538 был полностью аналоговым, так что никаких функций «сохранить и восстановить» не существовало. Все эффекты тоже были внешними аппаратными модулями, поэтому нужно было доводить одну песню до конца, прежде чем переходить к следующей. Переключаться между двумя или более проектами просто не представлялось возможным.

21. Какая композиция Scooter тебе больше всего нравится с технической точки зрения?
 Думаю, «Nessaja» обладала по-настоящему мощным звучанием для своего времени.

22. Можешь назвать свою любимую композицию Scooter с точки зрения звукорежиссуры? И самую нелюбимую?
 Помимо хитов, есть несколько треков, которые до сих пор меня по-особенному цепляют. Например, «This is a Monstertune» с альбома OHH, особенно благодаря арпеджиатору в B-части, который идет от синтезатора The Raven. Он до сих пор напоминает мне о моих первых рейв-днях. Еще оркестровая версия «Stripped», которую я однажды ночью сделал в студии, находясь там в одиночестве. И «Posse», потому что это просто весело. А «Where the Beats» (в живом исполнении) до сих пор вызывает у меня мурашки.

 Это была работа, которую мы сделали для нашего хорошего друга. И угадайте, кто исполнил ту самую часть «Daylight coming…» :-))) Спойлер: это был не HP ;-)
 Кстати, добавлю, что мы до сих пор поддерживаем теплые дружеские отношения и время от времени выпиваем вместе.

 Beta-version of my site was appeared at 02/10/1999. Firstly it was a my home page with Scooter-section. Official opening of my site took place on 05/10/1999. 12/10/1999 it became international (instead russian language-only) & since 09/02/2000 it is separate site with own web-address. Untill present time there was many addresses & redirects for my site.  2 октября 1999 года увидела свет бета-версия моего-сайта. Сначала он представлял из себя домашнюю страничку, одним из разделов которой был раздел о Scooter. Официальное открытие странички состоялось 5 октября, 12 октября сайт стал интернациональным, а 9 февраля 2000 года сайт о Scooter стал самостоятельным проектом с собственным адресом.
